FAQs
What is a Pastor?
A Pastor is a church leader who is called to preach, teach, lead worship, provide pastoral care, and shepherd God’s people. At Hope Lutheran Church, our Pastors are trained and ordained through the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS) and are committed to teaching God’s Word faithfully and caring for the spiritual needs of our congregation.
What is a DCE?
A DCE (Director of Christian Education) is a professional church worker trained through the LCMS to lead educational ministries in the church. At Hope, our DCE helps organize and support programs for children, youth, families, and adults—helping people grow in faith and live it out in daily life.
What is the Ministry Leadership Team?
The Ministry Leadership Team (MLT) is Hope’s elected board of leaders from the congregation. They work closely with the pastors and staff to provide vision, oversight, and support for the church’s ministries and operations.
What is the Ministry Support Staff?
This team includes those who keep the day-to-day operations of Hope running smoothly—administrative staff, communications, facilities, and others who support the work of ministry behind the scenes.
What is the Ministry Staff?
The Ministry Staff includes all those serving in hands-on ministry roles—Pastors, the DCE, music staff, children's ministry leaders, and others who lead programs and care for the spiritual and educational growth of our church family.
What is a “Call”?
In the LCMS, a “call” is a formal invitation extended by a congregation to a pastor or church worker to serve in their church. It’s more than a job—it’s a prayerful, Spirit-led process that reflects the church’s belief that God is calling that person to serve in that place.
How are church staff and leaders chosen?
Some staff members are hired based on their skills and experience, while others (like pastors or DCEs) are called through a congregational process. Board members and MLT members are elected by the congregation.
What is the difference between a volunteer leader and a staff member?
Staff members are paid employees who serve in official roles, while volunteer leaders give their time to lead ministries, teach, serve, and support the mission of the church.
