English as a Second Language (ESL)

Learning English opens the door to new opportunities, meaningful connections, and greater confidence in everyday life. At Hope Lutheran Church, we welcome adults from many countries and cultures to learn, practice, and strengthen their English skills in a caring and encouraging environment. Whether you're new to the United States or simply looking to improve your English, you'll find a place to learn, grow, and build community at Hope.

“Therefore welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God.”
-Romans 15:7

Class Information

Hope offers two ESL sessions each year—one in the fall and one in the winter.

Before each session begins, new students complete a placement test. This helps our teachers place each student in the class that best matches their current English skills.

Classes meet every Tuesday and Thursday from 6:30–8:30 PM in Hope's 300 classrooms. A complete schedule for each session is available during registration.

Hope currently offers three class levels:

  • Basic
  • Level 1
  • Level 2

Each classroom is led by one teacher and two assistants, providing students with personalized instruction, encouragement, and individual support throughout each class. Students are also encouraged to actively participate in class discussions as they build confidence using English in everyday conversations.

Hope's ESL program uses the Cambridge Ventures curriculum, a nationally recognized English language program developed by Cambridge University Press.

Students learn using the Cambridge Ventures workbooks while teachers guide each class using the accompanying instructor materials.

The complete Ventures program includes six levels of instruction. At Hope, we currently offer three levels based on staffing and classroom availability:

  • Basic – For students with little or no English experience.
  • Level 1 – For students with some understanding of English who want to improve everyday conversation and communication.
  • Level 2 – For students with a solid foundation in English who are looking to strengthen their speaking and writing skills, including skills that may support future employment opportunities.

The same Cambridge curriculum is also used by Wake Technical Community College, allowing students to continue their English education beyond the levels currently offered at Hope.

Each lesson is designed to help students build confidence using English in everyday life. Through listening, reading, speaking, and writing activities, students strengthen their communication skills in a welcoming and encouraging classroom environment.

Lessons focus on practical, real-life situations that students may encounter at work, at home, and throughout the community. Topics include completing job applications, accessing healthcare services, communicating in everyday conversations, and gaining a better understanding of life in the United States.
